Thinking about your family’s eye health can spark a lot of questions. At Advanced Eyecare Optometry, we would love to walk through the general guidelines together so you can feel confident about caring for your family’s vision, from scheduling children’s eye exams to supporting the needs of your cherished seniors.

The frequency of eye exams depends on each person’s age, health, and risk factors, but a personalized schedule is usually a great approach. As your trusted eye doctor in Chestnut Ridge, New York, we can work together to create a simple, easy-to-follow plan for every member of your family.

Why Are Regular Eye Exams So Important?

An eye exam is more than just a vision test. It’s a simple, comfortable way to look after your and your loved ones’ eyesight and overall wellness. These appointments can help us get a complete picture of your health.

Correct Your Vision

Vision changes over time—it’s just a natural part of life. A routine exam checks how clearly you see, both up close and far away. This helps our team find the right prescription to make everyday tasks like reading or driving easier.

If you already wear glasses, we can see if your prescription needs a little tweak to keep your world in focus. For those who don’t, we can catch subtle changes you may not have even noticed. Clear vision helps your child succeed at school and helps family members who drive stay safe on the road.

Protect Your Eye Health

Many common eye conditions can develop slowly without any obvious signs. Regular check-ups help your eye doctor spot potential issues early. Through comprehensive eye disease diagnosis and management, we can check for conditions like glaucoma (which affects the nerve at the back of your eye) or macular degeneration (which can affect central vision) before they cause noticeable changes.

A Window to Your Overall Well-Being

Did you know your eyes can offer clues about your general health? During an exam, your eye doctor can get a clear view of the blood vessels and nerve tissue at the back of your eye. Conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes can affect these vessels.

This is one of the only places in the body we can see them so directly without invasive techniques, and this unique view can sometimes reveal early signs of other health issues. Eye exams are crucial, as they can detect over 270 different health conditions

Eye Exam Frequency by Age Group

How often you should schedule an exam depends a lot on age and life stage. Different periods of life bring different eye care needs. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you plan for your family.

For Infants, Kids, and Teens

A child’s first comprehensive eye exam should happen between 6–12 months of age. We recommend another check between ages 3–5, right before they start school. This helps make sure their vision is developing properly.

After that, school-aged children and teens typically benefit from yearly exams. Good vision is important for learning, playing sports, and building confidence.

For Adults Ages 19–64

If you don’t have any vision symptoms or specific risk factors, an eye exam every 1–2 years is a great rule of thumb. We can help you find a schedule that works for you and your family.

One of the reasons annual or bi-annual exams are a good idea is that many adults in this age group spend a lot of time on screens. Regular exams can help address concerns like digital eye strain or dryness.

For Adults Over 65

For adults 65 and older, we suggest an annual eye exam. Yearly visits help us monitor age-related changes in vision and keep your eyes healthy. This is the time when conditions like cataracts can become more common.

We take a compassionate approach to senior eye care, focusing on comfort and clear communication. If you’re looking for a friendly eye doctor, our team has lots of experience helping seniors maintain their vision.

Glasses or Contact Lens Wear

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you’ll want to schedule an eye exam every year. This allows us to keep your prescription current. An outdated prescription may cause headaches and eye strain.

For contact lens wearers, we check the fit of your lenses and the health of your corneas to make sure you’re comfortable, which is why a yearly contact lens exam is recommended. A proper fit is key to happy, healthy eyes.

Your lifestyle and vision needs can also change from year to year. A yearly check-in is the perfect time to discuss how your eyewear is working for you. We can explore different options that may better suit your daily activities.

Factors That Call for More Frequent Visits

Some health and lifestyle factors mean you might benefit from more frequent eye exams. These guidelines are not one-size-fits-all. Chatting with your eye doctor is a great way to figure out what will fit your individual needs.

We may suggest more frequent visits if you:

  • Have a family history of eye disease, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration
  • Live with a chronic condition like diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Take medications that are known to affect vision
  • Have had an eye injury or eye surgery in the past

During your visit, we can talk through your overall health history together. This helps us create a care schedule that is right for you.

When to See Your Eye Doctor Sooner

You know your body better than anyone. If you notice something different about your vision or how your eyes feel, don’t wait for your next scheduled appointment. We are always happy to hear from you, and we want to help if something feels “off.”

Connect with our team if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Sudden blurry vision or eye pain
  • New flashes of light or a large, sudden increase of “floaters” in your vision
  • Persistent redness, dryness, or scratchiness
  • Trouble seeing at night or halos around lights
